Barclays House Choir, based in the Poole and Bournemouth area, was originally named Barclays House Sports and Social Club Musical Society and was founded following the completion of the new Head Office of Barclays International in Poole. The first rehearsal was held on 5 October 1976, when ten singers met to rehearse for a planned Christmas Concert. Numbers grew and 21 finally took part in the concert held in Barclays House. Since that time membership has widened and now consists of 70 members drawn from many occupations, the membership now being open to all.
Under the musical direction of James Grocott, who has led the choir for the last 31 years, the group has performed many of the major choral works including Mozart’s Requiem, Haydn's Creation, Mendelssohn’s Elijah and Brahms German Requiem, as well as more modern compositions such as John Rutter's Magnificat and Requiem. The choir has performed with soloists Kate Royal and Gareth Malone. We have also taken part in a joint concert with a young cellist Natalie Clein. All of which are now in great international demand. Most of the choir's concerts also involve the 35 strong St Peter's Orchestra, whose support is always very much appreciated. The choirs regular accompanist is Christine Taylor. The choir receives the financial support of the Barclays Bank Arts Council, and all concerts are given with their support. The choir has also supported local charities such as the Lewis Manning Hospice and the Poole Mayor’s Annual Charity Appeal. Money has also been raised for the Clarence Adoo Trust. The choir is often wrongly referred to as the Barclay House Choir. This is incorrect, the official title being the Barclays House Choir. There is a Barclay House Choir, a girls school choir in Australia whose website is as follows http://www.mlc.wa.edu.au/view/67/220/. We wish them all the best from their slightly older namesakes!
